St. Firmin, courageous preacher and faithful bishop, pray for us to boldly proclaim our faith and remain steadfast in truth. Amen.
ST. FIRMIN
St. Firmin was a 3rd-century bishop and missionary who became the first Bishop of Amiens in France. He was martyred for boldly preaching Christianity during the Roman persecutions.
St. Firmin was born around 272 AD, traditionally believed to be the son of a Roman senator in Pamplona, Spain. Drawn to Christianity from a young age, he converted along with his family through the preaching of St. Honestus, a disciple of St. Saturninus. Inspired to serve the Church, Firmin was ordained by St. Honoratus in Toulouse and was eventually consecrated as a bishop.
He set out as a missionary to Gaul (modern-day France), preaching the Gospel with courage and zeal. He traveled through various cities before settling in Amiens, where his preaching won many converts. As the first Bishop of Amiens, he built a growing Christian community amid an increasingly hostile Roman world.
His fervent evangelization drew the ire of Roman officials, and around 303 AD, during the persecution under Emperor Diocletian, Firmin was arrested. Refusing to renounce his faith or stop preaching, he was imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately beheaded.
St. Firmin quickly gained veneration as a martyr. His tomb in Amiens became a major pilgrimage site, and he was later named the patron saint of the city. He is honored for his missionary courage and unwavering dedication to spreading the Christian faith.
St. Firmin, courageous preacher and faithful bishop, pray for us to boldly proclaim our faith and remain steadfast in truth. Amen.
