After losing their parents, Florentina was placed under the guardianship of her brother Leander, who had taken monastic vows. Saint Florentina of Cartagena was born in the mid-6th century in Cartagena, Hispania, into a devout Christian family. She was the sister of three influential bishops during the Visigothic era: Saint Leander, Archbishop of Seville; Saint Isidore of Seville, who succeeded Leander; and Saint Fulgentius. After the death of their parents, Florentina was placed under the guardianship of her brother Leander, who had taken monastic vows. It was through his guidance that Florentina embraced the ascetic lifeFollowing her consecration to virginity, Florentina formed a religious community of virgins who desired to forsake the world. She established a convent, possibly at the monastery of Santa María de Valle near Écija, where her brother Fulgentius served as bishop. Florentina became the abbess of this community, dedicating herself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to God.Her brother Leander authored a work titled "Regula sive Libellus de institutione virginum et de contemptu mundi," providing guidance for virgins in monastic life.
