St. Gerard Majella, intercede for all mothers and children. Help us to trust in God’s providence and to live with love and humility. Amen.
ST. GERARD MAJELLA
St. Gerard Majella was a lay brother of the Redemptorist order known for his humility, miraculous intercessions, and special patronage of mothers and unborn children.
St. Gerard Majella was born on April 6, 1726, in Muro Lucano, Italy, into a poor but devout family. His father was a tailor, and Gerard learned the trade from a young age. After his father’s death, Gerard worked tirelessly to help support his family. From an early age, he demonstrated a deep spiritual life, often spending hours in prayer and offering acts of penance.
Despite poor health, Gerard persistently sought entry into religious life. He was eventually accepted as a lay brother into the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) founded by St. Alphonsus Liguori. As a Redemptorist, Gerard became known for his obedience, charity, and a gift for reading hearts. Though he held no official priestly duties, he deeply impressed those around him with his spiritual wisdom and miraculous abilities.
He performed many miracles during his lifetime, including bilocation, healing the sick, and even raising the dead. One of the most famous stories about him involves a dropped handkerchief he had once given to a woman. She later used it during a difficult childbirth, and both mother and child survived — earning him the title "Patron Saint of Mothers and Unborn Children."
Gerard died at the young age of 29 from tuberculosis, offering his life as a final act of love for God. His legacy continues to bring comfort to expectant mothers and families around the world.
St. Gerard Majella, intercede for all mothers and children. Help us to trust in God’s providence and to live with love and humility. Amen.
