ST. GIOVANNI BATTISTA SCALABRINI
St. Giovanni Battista Scalabrini was an Italian bishop and founder of the Scalabrinian Missionaries, known for his tireless advocacy for migrants and pastoral care for the poor and displaced.
St. Giovanni Battista Scalabrini was born on July 8, 1839, in Fino Mornasco, near Como, Italy. He was ordained a priest in 1863 and quickly became known for his intellectual talents and compassion for the marginalized. At just 36 years old, he was appointed Bishop of Piacenza, where he served for nearly three decades.
During his episcopacy, Bishop Scalabrini focused on religious education, catechesis, and social outreach. He founded schools, promoted seminary training, and reinvigorated the faith among his people. However, his greatest legacy lies in his work with migrants. At a time of massive Italian emigration, Scalabrini recognized the deep spiritual and social needs of those leaving their homeland in search of better lives abroad.
To support them, he founded the Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Charles (Scalabrinians) in 1887, followed later by a branch of missionary sisters. These missionaries were dedicated to accompanying migrants, offering them spiritual care, community, and practical help across continents.
He also personally visited Italian emigrants in the Americas, offering hope and unity to many who felt lost and abandoned. His vision of caring for the dignity of the human person, regardless of borders, was ahead of his time.
St. Scalabrini died on June 1, 1905. His legacy continues today through the global work of the Scalabrinians, who serve migrant communities in over 30 countries.
St. Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, patron of migrants, help us to walk with compassion toward all who journey in hope. Intercede for those far from home and strengthen those who serve them. Amen.
