St. Goar

St. Goar was a 6th-century priest and hermit known for his deep holiness, hospitality, and miracles. He became the patron saint of innkeepers and the region surrounding the town of St. Goar, Germany.

St. Goar was born around the year 500 in Aquitaine, in what is now modern-day France. From a young age, he exhibited a profound love for God, which led him to become a priest. Despite his ecclesiastical standing, he sought a life of greater solitude and spiritual reflection.

He eventually traveled to the Rhine region of Germany and settled near Oberwesel, where he lived as a hermit. His hermitage became a place of pilgrimage and spiritual refuge, as he was known for his generous hospitality and care for the poor and travelers. Goar dedicated his life to prayer, contemplation, and welcoming those in need.

Legend tells that he was falsely accused of misconduct by jealous clerics. However, King Sigebert I of Austrasia personally investigated the claims and found Goar to be a man of remarkable virtue. Impressed by his piety, the king offered to make Goar the bishop of Trier. Out of humility, Goar declined the position and returned to his hermitage.

St. Goar continued to live a life of service and prayer until his death around 575. In time, the town of St. Goar along the Rhine River developed around the site of his hermitage, preserving his memory and honoring his legacy.
