Saint Hermione of Ephesus was a 2nd-century Christian martyr and healer, venerated by the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church. She was one of the four daughters of Saint Philip the Deacon, as described in Acts 6. Although her name does not appear in the Bible, she and her sisters are noted as virgins and "gifted with prophecy" in Acts 21:8.Around the early 100s, after studying medicine, Hermione traveled with her sister Eutykhida to Ephesus to meet the Apostle John. Upon learning of his passing, they encountered Petronius, a disciple of Saint Paul, and became his followers. Hermione mastered the healing arts and established a medical clinic in Ephesus, providing care for the sick and the poor.Emperor Trajan, upon hearing of Hermione's prophetic gift, summoned her to Ephesus. She prophesied his victory over the Persians and the succession of his son-in-law Hadrian. When Trajan discovered her Christian faith, he attempted to persuade her to renounce Christ. After enduring several hours of face-striking, Hermione remained steadfast, comforted by a vision of the Lord. Trajan, impressed by her endurance, released her.Later, under Emperor Hadrian, Hermione faced severe tortures, including scourging, piercing of her feet with nails, and being thrown into a cauldron of boiling tar. Miraculously, she emerged unharmed, with the fire extinguished and the tar poured out. Hadrian, witnessing these events, ordered further tortures, but Hermione continued to endure without complaint. Eventually, she was beheaded for her faith.
Before her execution, two of her executioners, Theotimus and Theodulos, were paralyzed. They converted to Christianity after Hermione healed them and promised them salvation. She was buried in Ephesus, and her relics became a source of healing myrrh, leading to the establishment of churches dedicated to her.Saint Hermione is commemorated on September 4 in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic calendars. Her legacy as a healer and martyr continues to inspire Christians worldwide.
