St. Hospitius, holy hermit and faithful prophet, pray for us that we may live with faith, humility, and trust in God's providence. Amen.
ST. HOSPITIUS
St. Hospitius was a 6th-century hermit and miracle worker who lived near Nice, France. Known for his intense asceticism, prophetic gifts, and acts of healing, he became a revered figure among both locals and invading Lombards.
St. Hospitius was born around the year 500, most likely in Egypt or the Near East. Tradition suggests he may have been a monk in the Egyptian deserts before traveling westward, eventually settling as a hermit in a tower near the village of Villefranche-sur-Mer, close to present-day Nice in France.
Embracing a life of strict asceticism, Hospitius wore chains as a form of penance and devoted himself to prayer, fasting, and solitude. Despite his isolation, word of his holiness and miraculous powers spread throughout the region. He became known for healing the sick, comforting the poor, and foretelling future events—including invasions.
When the Lombards invaded the area around 575, Hospitius warned the locals in advance. Though many fled, he chose to remain in his tower. The Lombards discovered him and, impressed by his sanctity and lack of resistance, spared his life. One of the invaders, deeply moved by Hospitius, converted and became his disciple.
St. Hospitius continued his spiritual ministry until his death around 581. After his passing, his tower became a pilgrimage site, and his veneration spread throughout the region. Though little is known from contemporary sources, later biographies compiled the memories of those touched by his life.
St. Hospitius, holy hermit and faithful prophet, pray for us that we may live with faith, humility, and trust in God's providence. Amen.
