St. Hubert, faithful bishop and hunter of souls, guide us to seek God above all and protect those who walk through nature. Amen.
ST. HUBERT
St. Hubert was a nobleman turned bishop who became known as the patron saint of hunters. After a miraculous encounter with a stag bearing a crucifix, he converted, entered the Church, and dedicated his life to missionary work in the Ardennes region.
St. Hubert was born around 656 AD, likely in Toulouse, France, into a noble and privileged family. He was well-educated and drawn to the royal courts of the time, particularly that of Pepin of Herstal, where he gained prominence as a courtier and hunter. His life was filled with luxury, and he was especially known for his love of the hunt.
A dramatic turning point came on Good Friday, when Hubert went hunting while others observed the sacred day. In the forest, he encountered a magnificent stag with a glowing crucifix between its antlers. At the same moment, he heard a voice warning him to turn to the Lord and change his ways. Deeply moved, Hubert renounced his worldly life and sought spiritual direction.
He eventually became a priest and, in time, the Bishop of Liège, succeeding St. Lambert. As bishop, he worked tirelessly to evangelize the Ardennes region, converting many pagans to Christianity. He was known for his eloquent preaching, piety, and deep compassion for the poor.
Hubert is also credited with developing the “St. Hubert’s Key,” a method believed to cure rabies, and his name became closely associated with hunting traditions and animals. He died peacefully on May 30, 727, and was widely venerated thereafter.
St. Hubert, faithful bishop and hunter of souls, guide us to seek God above all and protect those who walk through nature. Amen.
