ST. HUGE

St. Hugh of Lincoln was an English bishop and Carthusian monk who is best remembered for his holiness, devotion to prayer, and service to the people. He helped establish the Carthusian Order in England and was known for his deep care for the poor and his diplomatic efforts in church and state matters.

St. Hugh was born in the early 1140s, likely in Burgundy, France. He was educated in the monastic tradition and became a Carthusian monk at the age of 15. His piety and devotion to the solitary life quickly marked him as a man of deep spiritual insight. After a period of time in the Carthusian monasteries of France, he was invited to England in 1175 by King Henry II to become the prior of the Carthusian monastery in Witham, Somerset.

Hugh’s commitment to the contemplative life and his gentle but firm leadership won him respect and affection. In 1186, he was appointed as Bishop of Lincoln, and he used his position to continue serving both the Church and the poor. As bishop, Hugh was known for his dedication to education, charity, and the care of the sick. He is also known for his role in the construction of Lincoln Cathedral, overseeing the work with great attention to detail.

Hugh was deeply compassionate toward the poor and worked tirelessly to improve the welfare of his community. He took a stand against the persecution of the Jews in England and sought to protect them during times of unrest. His diplomatic work extended to resolving conflicts between the English crown and the Church.

St. Hugh died on November 16, 1200, and his funeral was attended by many. His reputation for holiness grew quickly, and he was canonized by Pope Gregory X in 1276. His relics were later placed in a shrine at Lincoln Cathedral, where they became the site of pilgrimages for centuries.
