ST. LEO II
St. Leo II was a seventh-century pope known for defending orthodox Christology and implementing liturgical reforms; he was canonized for his piety, theological clarity, and commitment to the Church.
St. Leo II was born in Sicily around the year 611. He came from a region that was culturally and religiously vibrant, with close ties to both the Latin and Eastern Christian traditions. Leo was a learned man, well-versed in Latin and Greek, which was rare among the Roman clergy of his time. His command of languages and theology would serve him well during his pontificate.
Leo was elected pope in 682, succeeding Pope Agatho, though he was not consecrated until the following year due to delays in imperial confirmation from Constantinople. His pontificate lasted only about ten months, yet it was marked by firm theological leadership, especially in addressing the aftermath of the Sixth Ecumenical Council (Third Council of Constantinople, 680–681), which had condemned the heresy of Monothelitism—a doctrine that taught Christ had only one will.
Pope Leo II confirmed the decisions of that council and made clear in his correspondence that while he upheld the condemnation of Pope Honorius I, it was specifically for his failure to combat heresy effectively, rather than for teaching it. This careful theological clarification reflected Leo’s commitment to both truth and charity, preserving unity within the Church while defending orthodoxy.
Aside from his theological contributions, Pope Leo II focused on liturgical refinement and music. He was particularly noted for his efforts to improve sacred chant, and he encouraged the singing of psalms and hymns in the liturgy. He is believed to have promoted the use of the Ambrosian chant and enriched the liturgical life of the Church through reforms that elevated worship and clarity in doctrine.
Though his time as pope was brief, Leo II’s legacy lived on. He was remembered for his intellectual gifts, his fidelity to the teachings of Christ, and his desire to purify the Church of error. He died on July 3, 683, and was buried in St. Peter’s Basilica. His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death.
St. Leo II, faithful shepherd of the Church and guardian of the true faith, intercede for us that we may always uphold the truth with clarity and charity. Guide our hearts to remain loyal to Christ and His teachings. Amen.
