ST. LIBERATA OF COMO
Saint Liberata of Como, a 6th-century Benedictine nun, co-founded the Convent of Santa Margarita in Como, Italy, alongside her sister, Saint Faustina. Known for her deep spirituality and compassion, she is revered as a patroness of women in labor.
Saint Liberata of Como was born into a noble family in Rocca d'Olgisio, Italy. She and her sister, Saint Faustina, were raised by a guardian after their mother's death. Despite their father's efforts to arrange marriages for them, both sisters felt a strong calling to religious life. They fled their home and became hermits, eventually joining the Benedictine order in Como. Together, they founded the Convent of Santa Margarita, which flourished for over a millennium.
Liberata was known for her deep spirituality and compassion. One notable act of mercy was when she encountered a woman who had been crucified by her husband. Liberata took the woman down and miraculously healed her wounds through prayeShe is often depicted holding a lily, symbolizing purity, and two infants, representing saints Vital and Valeria. These representations highlight her patronage of women in labor and infantsSaint Liberata died in 580 AD and was buried at the Convent of Santa Margarita. Her relics are enshrined in the Cathedral of Como. She was canonized before the establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
