ST. MARGARET BOURGEOYS
St. Margaret Bourgeoys was a French-Canadian pioneer, educator, and foundress of the Congregation of Notre Dame, dedicated to the education and care of young girls and the poor.
St. Margaret Bourgeoys was born on April 17, 1620, in Troyes, in the Champagne region of France, into a devout but modest family. From an early age, she displayed a strong sense of faith and charity, feeling called to religious life. However, she was not accepted into cloistered orders, which ultimately led her to a different, missionary path.
In 1653, Margaret answered the call to assist in New France (modern-day Canada), a rugged and growing colony desperately in need of teachers and moral guidance. She traveled across the Atlantic, facing extreme hardships, and arrived in Ville-Marie (now Montreal), where she dedicated herself to the spiritual and educational needs of the settlers and their children.
Recognizing the immense need for education, particularly for girls, she established the first school in Montreal. Margaret’s teaching emphasized not just academics but also Christian values, preparing young women to become strong pillars of faith within their communities. She later founded the Congregation of Notre Dame of Montreal, one of the first uncloistered religious communities for women in North America, allowing sisters to actively serve society rather than remain isolated in convents.
Throughout her life, Margaret was known for her tireless work, her resilience in the face of colonial hardships, and her unshakable trust in divine providence. She endured setbacks, including fires, shortages, and harsh winters, but remained steadfast in her mission. Her example of service, humility, and dedication left an indelible mark on the Church in Canada and beyond.
St. Margaret Bourgeoys died on January 12, 1700, after a life of selfless devotion. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982, becoming Canada's first female saint. Her legacy lives on through the Congregation she founded and the countless lives she touched through education and charity.
St. Margaret Bourgeoys, guide of the young and protector of the poor, inspire us to live lives of service, courage, and faith. Teach us to trust God's providence as you did. Amen.
