St. Margaret of Hungary, pure and humble bride of Christ, pray for us to seek God's will above all things. Amen.
ST. MARGARET OF HUNGARY
St. Margaret of Hungary was a Dominican nun and royal princess who chose a life of prayer, penance, and service over luxury. She is honored for her deep humility, sanctity, and devotion to God.
St. Margaret of Hungary was born into nobility in 1242, the daughter of King Béla IV of Hungary and Queen Maria Laskarina. Her birth came at a critical time, as Hungary had just suffered from the Mongol invasion. In gratitude for her safe arrival, her parents dedicated her to God even before her birth, promising to offer her to religious life if peace returned to the kingdom.
At just 3 or 4 years old, Margaret was placed in the Dominican convent at Veszprém and later transferred to a monastery built specifically for her on an island in the Danube River near Buda (now known as Margaret Island). Although she had the right to live in comfort due to her royal status, Margaret embraced a life of strict poverty, penance, and humility.
She refused several marriage proposals, including ones from powerful rulers, choosing instead to remain fully consecrated to Christ. She took solemn vows as a Dominican nun and was admired for her intense spiritual discipline, devotion to the Passion of Christ, and acts of charity.
Despite being a princess, Margaret engaged in the humblest of tasks in the convent, such as cleaning and caring for the sick. She practiced severe asceticism, wearing rough clothing and fasting regularly. Her holiness was evident to all around her, and after her death at just 28 years old, miracles were reported at her tomb.
Her cult spread quickly, and she was beatified in the 17th century. Although canonization was delayed, Pope Pius XII formally approved her sainthood in 1943.
St. Margaret of Hungary, pure and humble bride of Christ, pray for us to seek God's will above all things. Amen.
