St. Maria Zheng Xu, courageous witness of faith and martyr of Christ, inspire us to stand firm in the face of persecution and to trust boldly in God's promises. Amen.
ST. MARIA ZHENG XU
St. Maria Zheng Xu was a Chinese Catholic laywoman who was martyred during the Boxer Rebellion for refusing to renounce her faith in Jesus Christ.
St. Maria Zheng Xu was born around 1814 in Hebei Province, China, into a Christian family deeply committed to their Catholic faith. Living in a time of great political and religious tension, Maria grew up practicing her faith quietly but steadfastly, embodying the virtues of prayer, charity, and courage throughout her life.
In 1900, China was plunged into chaos during the Boxer Rebellion, a violent uprising that targeted foreigners and Chinese Christians. Believers were seen as traitors to Chinese tradition and were subjected to brutal persecutions. Despite the mortal danger, Maria Zheng Xu refused to renounce her Christian faith. She continued to profess her belief in Christ openly and encouraged others to remain faithful as well.
On July 9, 1900, Maria was arrested along with many other Christians. She was given the ultimatum to deny her faith and save her life, but she chose martyrdom instead, firmly declaring her loyalty to Jesus Christ. She was executed alongside other members of her community and died a martyr’s death, her courage and fidelity serving as an inspiration to Christians across China and the world.
Maria Zheng Xu was one of the 120 Martyrs of China canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000. Her sacrifice remains a testament to the enduring power of faith under persecution and her witness continues to strengthen the Church, especially among Chinese Catholics today.
St. Maria Zheng Xu, courageous witness of faith and martyr of Christ, inspire us to stand firm in the face of persecution and to trust boldly in God's promises. Amen.
