St. Mary of Oignies, servant of the sick and mystic of divine love, guide us to deeper prayer, greater compassion, and unshakeable devotion to Christ. Amen.
ST. MARY OF OIGNIES
St. Mary of Oignies was a Belgian mystic and caregiver to lepers, known for her profound prayer life, spiritual visions, and devotion to serving the sick and poor.
St. Mary of Oignies was born in 1177 in Nivelles, in what is now Belgium. Raised in a wealthy and noble family, Mary from an early age showed an unusual detachment from worldly pleasures, preferring prayer and acts of charity over luxury. Against her wishes, she entered into an arranged marriage, but she persuaded her husband to live with her in chastity, dedicating their lives to the service of others.
Mary became particularly devoted to caring for lepers, then a marginalized and feared group. She and her husband lived near a leper colony, where she ministered daily, tending to wounds, offering food, and providing spiritual consolation. Her acts of mercy were seen as heroic, especially in an era when leprosy evoked terror and revulsion.
A woman of intense mystical experiences, Mary was known for frequent ecstasies, visions, and profound union with Christ, especially during Mass. She was deeply devoted to the Eucharist and to the sufferings of Jesus, often spending long hours in prayer and contemplation. Despite her own frail health, she tirelessly worked among the poor and the ill, embodying the Gospel call to love without limit.
Mary later moved to Oignies, where she lived in a cell attached to the Church of St. Nicholas. There she was mentored by Norbertine canons and became a spiritual guide for many, including Jacques de Vitry, who would later write her biography and promote her sanctity. She lived a life of hidden heroism, blending intense mystical union with self-sacrificing love for the most vulnerable.
St. Mary of Oignies died on June 23, 1213, surrounded by those she had served and inspired. Although never formally canonized by the Church, she has been venerated as a saint since her death, her life serving as a model of Christian charity and mystical devotion.
St. Mary of Oignies, servant of the sick and mystic of divine love, guide us to deeper prayer, greater compassion, and unshakeable devotion to Christ. Amen.
