ST. RADEGUNDES

ST. RADEGUNDES

Saint Radegund was a 6th-century Thuringian princess who became queen consort of King Chlotar I of the Franks. After enduring personal hardships, including the murder of her brother, she left the royal court to live a life of asceticism and founded the Abbey of the Holy Cross in Poitiers, France. Renowned for her humility and devotion, she is venerated as a saint in both the Catholic and Orthodox traditions.

Saint Radegund was born around 520 in Thuringia, a region in present-day Germany. Captured during a Frankish military campaign, she was brought to the court of King Chlotar I and became one of his wives. Despite her royal status, Radegund led a life marked by piety and compassion, tending to the poor and sick.

The turning point in her life came with the tragic murder of her brother, an event that deeply affected her. Seeking solace and a closer relationship with God, she left the royal court and sought permission to become a nun. With the support of Bishop Médard of Noyon, she established the Abbey of the Holy Cross in Poitiers around 557.

At the abbey, Radegund embraced a life of humility and service. She was known for her ascetic practices, including fasting and wearing simple attire, reflecting her commitment to spiritual purity. Her close associations with notable figures like the poet Venantius Fortunatus and the historian Gregory of Tours highlight her influence and the respect she commanded.

Radegund's legacy is preserved in the Church of St. Radegonde in Poitiers, where her tomb remains a site of veneration. Her life story, characterized by devotion, humility, and service, continues to inspire many.
