ST. SEVERIANUS
St. Severianus was an early Christian martyr from Sebaste, executed for his faith during the persecutions under Emperor Licinius, remembered for his bravery and steadfastness.
St. Severianus of Sebaste lived during the early 4th century in what is now modern-day Turkey. He was a devout Christian in the city of Sebaste, known for his boldness in proclaiming the faith at a time when Christianity was still illegal under Roman rule. His life unfolded during the turbulent period when Emperor Licinius aggressively persecuted Christians across the Eastern Roman Empire.
Despite the dangers, Severianus remained openly committed to Christ, refusing to perform pagan sacrifices or offer allegiance to the emperor’s gods. His fearless profession of faith drew the attention of local Roman authorities, who arrested him and demanded that he renounce his beliefs. When he refused, Severianus was subjected to torture meant to break his spirit and force a recantation.
According to tradition, he endured brutal beatings and humiliation but remained unwavering. His fortitude inspired other Christians in the region to stand firm in their faith. Ultimately, Severianus was sentenced to death by being hanged and beaten until he died, a method intended to maximize his suffering. His martyrdom took place around the year 320, and he quickly became venerated as a holy and heroic figure among the early Christian communities.
His relics were honored in Sebaste, and his feast day is celebrated on October 28. St. Severianus’s legacy reminds the faithful of the courage required to stand for Christ even at the cost of one's life.
St. Severianus, courageous martyr of Christ, pray for us. Strengthen our hearts in times of trial, that we may remain steadfast in faith and fearless in love for God. Amen.
