ST. SIMON OF CYRENE
Saint Simon of Cyrene carried the cross of Jesus on the way to Calvary. His act of compassion and strength is remembered as a powerful witness of love and service.
Simon of Cyrene was a man from the region of Cyrene in North Africa. His life became part of salvation history when he was pulled from the crowd by Roman soldiers and commanded to carry the cross of Jesus Christ during the journey to Golgotha. Though he did not volunteer, his encounter with Christ became a moment of profound grace and significance.
The Gospels describe how Jesus, weakened by scourging and pain, could not carry the heavy wooden cross alone. Simon stepped in, sharing the weight of that burden. Though nothing more is written in Scripture about his life afterward, tradition holds that this experience may have led Simon to become a follower of Christ. He is also believed by many to be the father of Alexander and Rufus, individuals known in early Christian communities.
