ST. STEPHANIE QUINZANI
St. Stephanie Quinzani was a Dominican tertiary known for her visions, stigmata, and her life of extreme humility, charity, and mystical union with Christ.
St. Stephanie (Stefana) Quinzani was born around 1457 in Soncino, near Cremona in northern Italy. From an early age, she demonstrated extraordinary religious devotion and a fervent desire for holiness. As a young girl, she was placed under the spiritual guidance of Blessed Matthew Carreri, a Dominican friar known for his wisdom and holiness. His mentorship would deeply shape Stephanie’s spiritual path, guiding her toward a profound life of prayer and virtue.
Stephanie eventually joined the Dominican Third Order, dedicating her life to Christ without withdrawing completely from the world. As a tertiary, she lived in her family home but followed the Rule of the Dominican Order, combining a life of prayer, contemplation, and active charity.
God blessed Stephanie with extraordinary mystical gifts. She experienced visions of Christ and the Virgin Mary, bore the marks of the stigmata, and often fell into ecstasies while meditating on the Passion of Christ. Despite these supernatural graces, she remained deeply humble, seeking no attention and continuing to serve the poor and sick tirelessly. She was especially devoted to teaching catechism and caring for the spiritual needs of her community.
Stephanie’s life was marked by severe physical sufferings, which she bore with extraordinary patience and even joy, uniting her pains to the sufferings of Christ. Her reputation for holiness grew, and many sought her prayers and counsel, recognizing in her a true friend of God.
She died on January 2, 1530, after a life completely consumed with love for God and neighbor. Her tomb in Soncino became a place of pilgrimage where many reported miracles through her intercession.
Although she was never formally canonized through a papal decree, her longstanding veneration and the testimony of her holy life led to her recognition as a saint by the Church.
St. Stephanie Quinzani, mirror of humility and charity, pray for us. Inspire our hearts to love Christ above all things and to serve others with tireless devotion and joy. Amen.
