ST. TANCHE

ST. TANCHE

Saint Tanche is a 7th-century martyr from the Champagne region of France, known for rejecting the advances of a servant, leading to her decapitation. Her cult is particularly strong in the region of Troyes, where churches are dedicated to her.

Sainte Tanche is a local Christian saint, venerated primarily in the region of Troyes, Champagne (modern-day Aube, France). She was a virgin and martyr who died in 637 AD, and her feast day is celebrated on October 10th. According to tradition, Saint Tanche was decapitated by a servant after rejecting his sexual advances. She is sometimes classified among the "cephalophores," saints who, according to legend, carried their own heads after decapitation. Two churches are particularly associated with Saint Tanche: Église Sainte-Tanche de Lhuître and Église Sainte-Tanche de Vaupoisson, both in the Aube region. The first church features medieval architecture, and the second holds a 19th-century statue depicting her martyrdom. Saint Tanche remains a symbol of faith and resistance against injustice. Her story is deeply rooted in local religious traditions, and she is remembered by the faithful in the Aube region, particularly in Lhuître, where her burial site is located.
