ST. THEODORA
Empress Theodora was a Byzantine empress who wielded significant political power. She supported women's rights and the Miaphysite doctrine. During the Nika riots of 532, her resolve was crucial in preserving her husband's reign. She is remembered for her influence on the empire's politics and social reforms.
Saint Theodora, born in the early 6th century, was a woman who rose from humble origins to become one of the most influential figures in Byzantine history. She was married to Emperor Justinian I and, alongside him, played a key role in the governance of the Byzantine Empire. Her influence is particularly remembered for her actions during the Nika riots of 532. When the citizens of Constantinople revolted against her husband's reign, it was Theodora who displayed remarkable courage, advising Justinian to stay and fight, which ultimately saved his empire.
Theodora’s reign is also marked by her advocacy for the rights of women, including the establishment of laws that gave women more autonomy in marriage, property rights, and the ability to leave abusive marriages. She was a staunch supporter of the Miaphysite faith, a Christian doctrine that emphasized the unity of Christ’s divine and human natures. This stance put her in opposition to the Chalcedonian orthodoxy of her time.
She is also credited with improving the Byzantine legal system, which later formed the foundation for Justinian's famous legal code, the "Corpus Juris Civilis."
Her legacy remains significant in both the religious and social spheres of Byzantine history, marking her as one of the most influential empresses in history.
