ST. TORIBIO ROMO

Saint Toribio Romo González was a Mexican priest martyred during the Cristero War in 1928. He is venerated as the patron saint of migrants, known for his compassion and dedication to the faithful.

Saint Toribio Romo González was born on April 16, 1900, in Santa Ana de Guadalupe, Jalisco, Mexico. From a young age, he showed a strong desire to become a priest. He entered the seminary at the age of eleven and was ordained at twenty-two. His heart burned with love for God and for the people he was called to serve.

During the violent religious persecution in Mexico known as the Cristero War, priests were often hunted, and public worship was banned. Father Toribio chose to remain with his people, celebrating Mass in secret and providing sacraments at great personal risk. He moved from place to place to avoid detection, but never stopped ministering to the faithful.

On February 25, 1928, soldiers found him in his rectory and shot him without trial. He was only twenty-seven years old. He died a martyr, giving his life for the Church he loved and served so faithfully.

After his death, stories began to spread about his spiritual presence helping migrants during their dangerous journeys. Many testified that a kind young priest appeared to guide or protect them, only to realize later it was Saint Toribio. Because of these accounts, he became widely recognized as the patron saint of migrants.

Saint Toribio was canonized on May 21, 2000. His story continues to inspire faith, bravery, and compassion. His devotion to Christ and his people reminds us to remain steadfast in love and service, even in the face of danger.
