ST. WULFRAN

ST. WULFRAN

Saint Wulfran was a 7th-century Archbishop of Sens who later became a missionary in Friesland. He is remembered for his preaching, miracles, and the conversion of many during his mission.

Saint Wulfran was born around 640 in France into a noble family connected to the royal court. Despite opportunities for political advancement, he felt a calling to religious life and entered the clergy. He quickly gained a reputation for holiness and wisdom, and around 692, he was appointed Archbishop of Sens.

As archbishop, Wulfran was deeply committed to reforming the clergy and strengthening the moral life of his diocese. He led by example, living simply and devoting himself to prayer and the care of his people. However, after only a few years, he resigned his position, feeling called to missionary work in pagan lands.

He traveled north to the region of Friesland, in what is now the Netherlands, where he preached the Gospel among the Frisian people. The area was deeply rooted in pagan practices, including human sacrifice, and Wulfran boldly confronted these customs. He gained the support of local leaders and began converting many to Christianity through his preaching and reported miracles.

Wulfran is said to have rescued children who were destined to be sacrificed and baptized them into the Christian faith. His compassion and courage moved many to embrace Christianity. Though not all accepted his message, his efforts laid the groundwork for future evangelization in the region.

Later in life, Wulfran returned to France and settled at the Abbey of Saint Wandrille in Normandy, where he spent his final years in prayer and solitude. He died on March 20, 703. His relics became objects of veneration, and his legacy as a bishop and missionary lives on.
