ST. YVES
Saint Yves of Kermartin was a 13th-century French priest and lawyer known for defending the poor and promoting justice. He is the patron saint of lawyers and is honored for his integrity and holiness.
Saint Yves of Kermartin was born on October 17, 1253, in Brittany, France. He came from a noble family and was gifted with both intelligence and a deep spiritual sensitivity. He studied civil and canon law in Paris and later in Orléans, preparing for a career in law and service to the Church.
Yves became a diocesan official and judge, known for his honesty, fairness, and refusal to accept bribes. He defended the rights of the poor, widows, and orphans, often providing legal services at no cost. He believed that justice was not a matter of status or wealth, but of truth and moral duty. His fairness and compassion earned him the nickname “Advocate of the Poor.”
He later felt called to the priesthood and was ordained, combining his legal expertise with deep pastoral care. As a priest, he lived in poverty, gave generously to those in need, and led a life of prayer and charity. He never used his position for personal gain and often took in the homeless and fed the hungry from his own home.
Saint Yves served both Church and society with humility and conviction. He reconciled conflicts, offered wise counsel, and brought peace where there was division. His life was a balance of legal knowledge, spiritual depth, and practical love for others.
He died on May 19, 1303, and was buried in Tréguier, where devotion to him grew rapidly. He was canonized in 1347 and remains one of the most beloved saints in Brittany and among legal professionals worldwide.
O Saint Yves, defender of justice and friend of the poor, You served with humility, wisdom, and love. Help us act with fairness and compassion, And walk in the path of truth and mercy. Amen.
