ST.ELUTHERIUS THE ABBOT
Saint Eleutherius was a 6th-century abbot of St. Mark’s near Spoleto, Italy, known for his humility, miraculous exorcisms, healing gifts, and his prayerful support of Pope Gregory the Great. He died in Rome on September 6, 585.
Saint Eleutherius served as abbot of St. Mark’s monastery near Spoleto during the early to mid‑6th century. Celebrated for his profound simplicity and spirit of compunction, he was esteemed for performing miracles, including exorcisms and raising the dead. One notable incident involved a boy possessed by demons: after initial deliverance, Eleutherius remarked, “Since the child is among the servants of God, the devil dares not approach him.” His words, perceived as prideful, allowed the demon to return. In response, Eleutherius publicly confessed, and led the monastery in a period of communal fasting and prayer until the boy was freed again. During his time in Rome, Pope Gregory the Great, too weak to fast on Holy Saturday, requested Eleutherius’s prayers at the church of Saint Andrew. Moved by tears, Eleutherius interceded, and the Pope emerged strengthened enough to complete the fast . He is also credited with raising a dead man to life. After resigning his abbacy, he died in 585 at Saint Andrew’s monastery in Rome. His relics were later moved to Spoleto, where he continues to be venerated. Eleutherius exemplified humility, communal leadership, and the transformative power of prayer—themes that resonate across Christian monastic tradition.
